Kingsmead Primary School

The County Council in conjunction with partners completed the new Kingsmead School in August 2004. The school design and construction is based on the principles of sustainable construction. Some of the details of the project are include below:

Why?

  • To provide a 150 place Primary School on a new housing development.
  • To produce an exemplar project of sustainable construction and collaborative working;
  • To deliver a learning and teaching environment for the future;
  • To stimulate design options for future developments in Cheshire.

Who?

  • A project delivered through partnership: Cheshire County Council; Willmott Dixon; White Design.
  • Mander Structural Design; Arups; Mitie Engineering.
  • Part of the DfES “Schools of the Future” Agenda.
  • Part of the ReThinking Construction Programme.
  • Additional funding for project from DfES (Working Environment for Teachers) and NWDA

When?

  • Design initiated in April 2003, planning permission obtained in Summer 2003;
  • Construction started 3rd October, due for completion July 2004, opening autumn term 2004.

What?

Sustainable Construction Principles:

Social

  • Flexible space for different teaching scenarios
  • Fully integrated IT provisions and facilities
  • Comfort working conditions and high quality teaching and learning environments
  • Enhanced facilities for Support Staff, larger staff room
  • Staff shower and drying room facilities
  • Greater emphasis on construction safety, reduction in reportable incidents
  • Appointment of staff with commitment to design ethos
  • Crime designed out of scheme-multiple use of CCTV systems for external security
  • Green travel plan required for school
  • Discussions initiated on provision of local food supply to school

Economic

  • Rethinking construction principles (innovation, partnering-early involvement in decisions,
    performance monitoring, value engineering)
  • Local employment policy for construction
  • Sourcing of materials locally and commitment to reduce travel distance to site
  • Reduced whole life costs of building

Environmental

  • Siting - adoption of passive solar strategy, classrooms facing landscaped area, use of natural features on site.
  • Structure -use of glulam timber frame-certified timber.
  • Materials - Specification of locally produced and procured goods and materials. Greater emphasis on reduction of carbon dioxide (embodied CO2 greater use of timberless concrete, plaster, metal, PVC and cement). Locally sourced timber flooring being investigated. Materials chosen for ability to be recycled at end of life. Use of recycled materials were appropriate.
  • Lighting - Maximising natural lighting with daylight sensor controls. Specification of low energy, high efficiency lamps .
  • Heating and Hot Water - Insulation significantly in excess of current regulatory requirements. The use of thermal mass to provide summer cooling and a winter heat sink. Natural ventilation with automatic controls, linked to building use and operation. Use of biomass and gas boiler for heating system (Talbotts Case Study). Use of solar thermal scheme for hot water demand (Kingsmead Case Study 1) (Kingsmead Case Study 2). Use of small scale PV to provide part of school electrical demand.
  • Water Use - Rainwater harvesting and greywater use in toilet flushing. Water conservation measures introduced. Sustainable Urban Drainage System within school grounds area.
  • Waste and Recycling - Building operational waste minimised and recycling scheme requested.
  • Environmental Education - Environmental awareness within contractor training. Adoption of Movement for Innovation Environmental Performance Indicators. Additional facilities to increase the opportunities to use the building as a teaching and learning aid for sustainability (development of a software package for on site use).
  • Grounds - Use of semi-sheltered external areas to provide research and learning spaces. Provision of ecological learning areas in grounds.
Funding issues
  • The project was the third in Cheshire to be completed in full partnering.
    Total budget £2.3 million (£1800sq/m) included all sustainable construction principles.
  • A baseline sustainability project was initially taken forward but the project was fortunate to secure additional funding of £475,000 to enable the features and principles to be extended.
  • A range of EPI's are in the process of being developed for the project construction and operation.
