Wistaston
Green Primary School
Wistaston Green Primary School, near Crewe, is a new school project
completed in October 2004. The project has been taken forward as the second
partnering sustainable school in Cheshire with Willmott Dixon the main
partner.
The project includes the principles of sustainable construction with
a number of key features. The building has the following elements:
it is highly energy efficient with a central thermal mass with efficiencies
greater than building regulations, timber forms an important element of
the project with a glulam timber frame and western red cedar part facade,
natural ventilation scheme, high levels of natural daylight, a rainwater
harvesting scheme with runoff from the roof used for flushing school toilets.
Hot water within the school will come from a solar thermal scheme on the
south elevation of the roof-this scheme was developed by Solar Twin, based
in Chester.
A small wind turbine is to be erected on top of the library column (in
photo below) which will provide electricity for equipment in the area
below. Pupils will also be able to monitor the wind speed and direction
from the equipment and study changes in weather conditions.
The pupils will move into the new school when complete leaving the old
school to be demolished. All works are due to be completed in around January
2005.
